Enhancing the diffusion of climate change related technologies, particularly to developing countries has emerged as a critical priority in efforts to combat climate change. Although licensing is an important channel for technology transfer and diffusion, it has received overall little attention per se in this context and in the broader discussion about intellectual property rights (IPRs) and climate change. A closer look at issues surrounding licensing is thus critical to achieve a better understanding of the challenges facing the diffusion of climate change related technologies.
Against this background, this one day workshop will examine knowledge gaps concerning the licensing of climate change technologies to developing countries from the viewpoint of a diverse range of stakeholders. It will also seek to identify possible options and concrete actions in this area taking into account the potential contribution of different actors including the private sector, publicly funded institutions as well as international institutions and initiatives such as the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism, the Green Climate Fund and WIPO Green.
The workshop is organized by the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), Delft University of Technology and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). It will take place on November 29, 2013 at WIPO’s headquarters in Geneva (Room 13), from 9h00 to 17h00.
